Substack coaching for women over 40: how to choose

A Substack coach worth hiring when you are over 40 does three things: sets up your publication so it can take money, shows you how strangers find you, and helps you put one offer in front of the readers you already have. Ask anyone who leads with follower counts how their clients got paid. I started my own publication in December 2024 at 54, sat at 11 subscribers in February 2025, and built it by doing the setup work before the growth work.
Here is how to tell the useful help from the expensive kind.
What does a Substack coach do?
Three different jobs get sold under one name. Setup covers your homepage, your welcome email, your paid tiers, your pricing and where the paywall sits. Growth covers Notes, recommendations and the habits that bring readers who have never heard of you. Offers cover the thing people buy: a workshop, a guide, an audit, a service.
Most writers over 40 need the first and the third. You already know something people pay for. The publication is the storefront, and the storefront is usually the part that is broken.

Why does being over 40 change what you need?
Your expertise already exists. You are not looking for a topic, you are looking for a way to get paid for the thing you have done for 18 years. That removes half of what beginner coaching teaches.
Your time is short. Most women I work with are fitting this around a job, clients, or family, so a plan that needs two hours a day fails in week two. A plan that needs 45 minutes, five days a week, survives.
Your money is real money. At 25 you can lose $2,000 on a course and call it tuition. At 52 that $2,000 has a job. Buy the smallest thing that answers your actual question, then buy the next one if it worked.
Five questions to ask before you hire anyone
- What did you do for your last three clients, and what changed for them in 60 days?
- Where did your own paid subscribers come from?
- Do you work on my publication, or do I watch videos and apply them alone?
- What is the smallest thing I can buy from you first?
- Who is this wrong for?
The last one tells you the most. Anyone who says their program works for everybody has not run it enough times to see it fail.
What does Substack coaching cost?

Yes. Age helps here, because the work you have already done is the product. I launched in December 2024 at 54 with no audience on the platform, and the readers who pay me are people who wanted an answer from someone who had done the job.
Do I need a big list before anyone will pay me?
No. Small lists pay when the offer matches what the reader is stuck on. A list of 300 people who trust you will buy a $97 workshop before a list of 5,000 strangers buys anything.
How long does it take to set up a Substack properly?
The setup itself is a weekend of work: homepage, welcome email, tiers, pricing, one offer. Getting read takes longer, and the first paid sale usually follows the first honest ask, not the hundredth post.
What is the difference between a Substack coach and a Substack strategist?
A coach works on you, your habits and your consistency. A strategist works on the business: pricing, offers, conversion, and what the publication is for. Look at which one you keep failing at and buy that.
