How often should you post on Substack Notes?

September 23, 2026

Post 3 to 5 Notes a day, at least 2 hours apart, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the time zone where most of your readers live. That cadence is what built most of my newsletter. Notes drove about 60% of my subscriber growth. The number that moved was never how many Notes I posted. It was how many of them said one specific, useful thing a stranger could use the same day.

How often should you post on Substack Notes?

Three to five a day, every day, is the range that works. One a day keeps you invisible. Ten a day floods the same readers and your reply rate falls off.

Spread them out. Two hours between Notes gives each one its own window in the feed and its own set of readers. Four Notes stacked inside one hour compete with each other.

If 3 a day is not realistic this month, pick 2 and hold them for 30 days. Consistency reads as reliability, and the feed rewards writers it can predict.

What is the best time to post on Substack Notes?

Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. in your readers' time zone, with the strongest windows early morning and mid afternoon. Readers open Substack with coffee and again in the slump after lunch.

Check your own numbers before you trust mine. Open your Notes stats, sort by reactions and replies, and write down the hour each of your top 10 Notes went out. That is your schedule, not a general best practice.

You can write the whole day in one sitting and space them out. Here is how to schedule Substack posts and Notes in advance.

How many Notes a day is too many?

More than 6 a day, for most writers. The ceiling is not a rule Substack enforces. It is attention. The same people see you every time, and the fifth Note of the day gets the tired version of your thinking.

A simple test: if your replies per Note are dropping while your posting count climbs, you are past your ceiling. Cut back and put the extra time into commenting on other writers' Notes.

Should you post Notes every day?

Yes, and weekends count. Saturday and Sunday mornings are quieter in the feed, so a good Note reaches further.

What matters more than perfect attendance is never going dark for a week. A 7-day gap costs you the reach you spent a month building.

Why do my Notes get views but no subscribers?

Because views come from the feed and subscribers come from your profile. A reader has to want to know who wrote the line before they click your name.

Notes that convert carry a real number, a real decision, or a sentence the reader has been thinking all week. Notes that teaser-link to your latest post convert worst of all. I broke that down in the 5-point diagnostic for Notes that get views but no subscribers.

It also helps to know the difference between followers and subscribers on Substack, because a follower is not on your email list.

What should you post in a Note?

Rotate a small set of shapes so you never stare at a blank box:

  • One true sentence with a number in it.
  • A two-line contrast: what most people do, and what you do instead.
  • A small behind-the-scenes decision from your own week.
  • A question you were asked by a reader, answered plainly.
  • A steal-this step somebody can run today.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I post on Substack Notes as a beginner?
Two a day for the first 30 days, then 3 to 5 once writing them stops taking an hour.

Do Notes hurt my newsletter open rates?
No. Notes live in the app and the feed, not in the inbox, so they do not add to anyone's email load.

How long should a Note be?
Anywhere from 8 words to about 150. Short single-idea lines get the most replies for me.

Should I repost my old Notes?
Yes. Put your best performers on a 4-week rotation and reword nothing.

Do links in Notes reduce reach?
A Note built around a link performs worse than a Note that stands on its own, so put the idea first and save links for the comments.

How many Notes does it take to grow?
Think in months, not Notes. Most writers see the first steady flow of subscribers somewhere between week 6 and week 10 of daily posting.

Is it better to post Notes or write more newsletters?
Notes get you discovered. The newsletter turns those readers into people who pay you. You need both, and Notes are the cheaper half.
